Emotional Extremes: God Understands

There are times in our lives when everything appears to be going smoothly, and we find ourselves basking in the comfort of stability and happiness. However, it is often during these moments of tranquility that life can take an unexpected turn, revealing challenges and hardships that we may not have been prepared to face. One of the most profound and heart-wrenching experiences that can disrupt our sense of well-being is the death of a loved one. This loss can shake the very foundation of our existence, leaving us grappling with a myriad of emotions such as grief, sorrow, and even anger. The death of someone dear to us is not just a momentary setback; it is a significant life event that can lead to a long and arduous journey through the stages of mourning and healing. This loss, if not well dealt with can lead to depression.

In today's society, depression has become an increasingly prevalent issue, affecting individuals across all demographics and backgrounds. While it is true that most people encounter feelings of sadness or despair at various points in their lives, the reality is that many individuals struggle to navigate through these dark periods and find their way back to a more positive state of mind. It is essential to recognize that while the journey through depression can be daunting, it is possible to seek help and find pathways to recovery, emphasizing the importance of community, therapy, and self-compassion in overcoming this pervasive challenge.

It is normal to experience “Situational Depression" also known as reactive depression, a mood disorder triggered by a specific event or situation, often characterized by feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and other symptoms that can last several months arising from the loss of a job, relocation, death of a loved one, divorce, retirement among the others. “Psychological Depression” on the other hand is a more disconcerting issue — in the US alone it is estimated that this year over 20 million people will experience this form of depression. In a study by the Healthy Caribbean Coalition (2017) of students across four islands, Jamaica had the highest levels of depressive symptoms, while the Bahamas and St. Kitts and Nevis had the lowest.

Psychological depression is a systemic problem in our world — it affects people of all ages irrespective of race, gender, economic status, or religion. The most familiar symptoms of psychological depression are feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, and sleeplessness, as well as a change in appetite — eating too little to eating too much. Other common symptoms include excessive crying, staying in bed longer than normal, and even entertaining thoughts of wishing one’s life was over.

Psychological depression can greatly affect one’s thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and physical well-being thus causing them to feel empty, hopeless, worthless, helpless, guilty, irritable, hurt, restless, lacking interest and energy, and have a “sad mood” that will not go away. Most who experience this form of depression say there is an “absence of joy” in their life, that life essentially is “dark,” and that their future looks “bleak.” Since depression causes a “pessimistic view of things” and stifles one’s initiative, it is imperative that people learn to overcome it so that they can live with a greater degree of happiness, more energy, and a more positive attitude… thus enabling them to live with greater satisfaction and fulfillment.

Biblical Example: Lesson from Elijah

In reference to the above, I would like to direct us to the word of God as spoken to Elijah the Tisbite by the Lord in 1 King 19. He found himself in what can truly be described as a state of depression. This followed a victorious moment when he called on the name of the LORD God of Abraham, Issac, and of Jacob, bringing down fire from heaven and then having the false prophets of Ahab killed.

However, once the news got to Jezebel, she sent a threat to Elijah which drew him into the state of depression. He chose to run away as means of dealing with the situation. He ran away and came face to face with the very God in whose name he had prayed.

Elisha’s Despair: God’s Response

Elijah was overwhelmed with despair, and God acknowledged his struggle with care and patience. God allowed him to rest beneath the juniper tree, understanding his exhaustion. When Elijah lost his appetite, an angel provided him with food. After sleeping again, God permitted his rest, then nourished him once more before sending him on a journey to Mount Horeb. Though the journey took 40 days, God remained patient.

At Horeb, God led Elijah to a place of worship (vv. 7-9) and invited him to express his feelings (v. 9). God then addressed Elijah’s misconceptions that contributed to his despair (v. 18) and provided him with a renewed purpose, giving him specific tasks to accomplish (vv. 15-17).

Conclusion

In conclusion, depression is a complex and deeply personal struggle that can affect anyone, regardless of their circumstances. Whether triggered by the loss of a loved one, life’s uncertainties, or psychological factors, it is a condition that requires understanding, patience, and support. The biblical account of Elijah reminds us that even the strongest individuals can face despair, but God's response demonstrates His care, guidance, and provision in times of distress. Just as Elijah found solace and renewed purpose through God’s intervention, we too can find healing through faith, community, and professional support. Overcoming depression is a journey, but with the right resources and a willingness to seek help, a life of renewed hope and fulfillment is possible.
